Remember when…….Temuri Ketsbaia goal celebration

Published by Row 'S' Army on April 27th, 2010 - in Season 1997/1998

Welcome to the first instalment of my ‘Remember When’ series, the intention with this is to post videos or pictures from days gone by that will provoke some memories and debate.

Temuri Ketsbaia goal celebration

After scoring in the final moments of a match at St James’ Park against Bolton Wanderers in 1998, Georgian international Temuri Ketsbaia proceeded to go mental during his goal celebration.

Ketsbaia ripped off his shirt, throw it into the crowd and attacked the advertising hoardings unlucky enough to be within range of his wildly swinging right boot. He also attempted to take off his right boot and when left-back Alessandro Pistone was silly enough to try and go to celebrate with him, he was met with Ketsbaia’s flailing elbow.

And the reason for this bizarre goal celebration?

Well apparently Ketsbaia was incensed that had been left out of the team in the previous weeks and this was his way to demonstrate to the manager that he his should be in the team. Nice one you nutcase!

Ketsbaia was signed on a Bosman free by manager Kenny Dalglish in the summer of 1997. Shortly after signing he instantly become popular among fans when he scored an extra-time goal against Croatia Zagreb in the Champions League qualifying match. He also played in the 1998 & 1999 F.A. Cup Final defeats before leaving to join Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2000.

Currently he is manager of the Georgian national team after a very successfully time as manager of Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta FC.
