Pre-season Of Disasters (so far) !

Published by Row 'S' Army on July 26th, 2011 - in Season 2011/2012

To quote part of the famous rant from the legendary Kevin Keegan “I’ve kept really quiet…”.

This is my usual stance during pre-season because frankly there isn’t much point reading too much into the friendly matches, they are just a small step up from training ground games and are purely beneficial for player fitness and for new signings to bond into the team system. However, this pre-season Newcastle United seemed to have lurched from one disaster and hiccup to another meaning there now seems to be an air of uncertainly and disharmony once again over shadowing the preparations for the coming new season.

After the euphoria of promotion and then the decent start we made last season, which included beating Villa 6-0 and of course thumping the mackems 5-1, the wheels started to fall off again when Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias inexplicitly sacked Chris Hughton in the December. Hughton was replaced by Alan Pardew and this Ashley puppet then reassured fans in January that leading goalscorer and talisman Andy Carroll wouldn’t be sold.

With these two moments alone all the good work and rebuilding that had been done since relegation was undermined. Fast forward to this pre-season and we’ve already seen contract wrangling surrounding three of our key players in Kevin Nolan, Joey Barton and Jose Enrique.

Nolan wanted a 5-year-contract which in my opinion at 29 was correctly not granted, but with two years left on his current deal there would appear no reason to sell our club captain and top goalscorer. The decision was publicly slated by Joey Barton proving it was obvious that Nolan was a leading figure in the dressing room and with his departure so too has a major factor in the great team spirit gone.

Our first friendly match saw us beat Darlington 2-0 thanks to goals from Joey Barton and Sammy Ameobi. Nothing unusual about that, but after our second goal was scored by Shola’s brother a large contingent of the 6,000 travelling Toon fans decided they would celebrate by invading the pitch. Things then turned ugly with fans being involved in shuffles with Police and Darlo fans who had also decided to run on the pitch. As a result the club has now banned the sale of away tickets to non-members and are trying to identify the main culprits. The fact the fans invaded the pitch took everyone by surprise and is totally out of character for the largely well behavioured and humoured travelling Toon Army, the last incident of this kind occurred way back in 1990 during the infamous play-off defeat to 5under1and.

To rub salt in the wounds Shane Ferguson and Danny Guthrie were injured during the Darlington victory meaning they will both miss the start of the season.

Following the Darlo game the club have headed to the US of A to play three games. Preparations went awry before touch down in the States with visa applications refused for Joey Barton and Nile Ranger given their criminal records, and late paperwork meant new signing Yohan Cabaye had to travelling to Holland to play for the reserves instead along with Barton & Ranger.

A bore 0-0 draw against Sporting Kansas was overshadowed by an injury to Hatem Ben Arfa who was stretchered off following a bad tackle. Ben Arfa was flown home and x-rays showed no break in his left ankle, but the attacking midfielder is expected to be out for at least 6 weeks. Given the extend of his horrific injury last year exceptions must be tempered for the lad because we can’t expect him to stay injury free for the full season. The lack of attacking options without him is a major concern however.

The second game of the tour against Orlando City saw United lose 1-0 but again the match was overshadowed, this time by a Twitter outburst in Spanish from Jose Enrique.

“The Club is letting go of all the main players. Seriously, do you think is the fault of the players? Andy, etc etc Nolan? This club will never fight again to be among the top 6 with this policy. I think you fans are the best and you deserve the best. Not what they are doing with the club. Thanks to everyone for supporting me. They give the money I have already. They lie all the time. But is no for money is because they don’t want. They don’t want spend in the club and bring quality players that’s why everybody go.”

Despite the fact this action is highly unprofessional it does serves to highlight the level of frustration towards the club among the senior players. What Enrique is saying is not earth shattering, most switched on fans will have already realised that Mike Ashley’s policy at the football club is Premier League survival at the minimal cost to maximise his profit. Enrique has been fined £100k for his outburst and has finally burnt his bridges with the NUFC management meaning his departure would appear to be imminent.

The last game of the tour against Columbus Crew takes place tomorrow morning and with the news that Ryan Taylor has been ruled out with injury and that Danny Simpson has flown home for the birth of his child, a total of up to 10 first-team players could be missing (Joey Barton, Nile Ranger, Mike Williamson, Yohan Cabaye, Haten Ben Arfa, Danny Simpson, Shane Ferguson, Danny Guthrie, Ryan Taylor, Jose Enrique) which is hardly great news for a tour where we haven’t scored one goal as yet.

There has to be some positives though and the signings of Yohan Cabaye, Demba Ba, Sylvain Marveaux and Mehdi Abeid have bolstered the squad. However, a left-back and at least one more striker must surely be brought in by the end of August if we are to be competitive,

Our friends at United For Newcastle has produced a video in light of recent events which sums up the feeling surrounding the whole sorry Mike Ashley regime.

Things are far from rosy these days at St James’ Park and something dramatically needs to change before the real action starts on Sunday 14th August.

5 Word Analysis Of Each Player

Published by Row 'S' Army on June 9th, 2011 - in Season 2011/2012

Despite the fact the fixture list isn’t out till next week and the players don’t report back to training until next month, Newcastle United are going through their usual pre-season turmoil.

Senior players Joey Barton and Kevin Nolan both have had contracts revelations, while the silence in deafening  over Jose Enrique’s contract.

The transfer rumours and gossip are also in full swing with everybody from Gervinho to Neil Taylor being touted as likely new signings, while Yohan Cabaye looks the only certain new addition at this stage.

With all that in mind now is a good time to assess our current squad before Alan Pardew’s ‘big’ summer of rebuilding, therefore, here is our ’5 Word Analysis Of Each Player’.

Goalkeepers
Stephen Harper – Is he now too old?
Tim Krul – Will he be new no1?
Fraser Forester – Invaluable experience last two seasons.
Ole Soderberg – Can’t see staying much longer.

Defenders
Danny Simpson – Solid right-back who has improved.
Jose Enrique – Please sign a new contract.
Mike Williamson – Mr reliable at the back.
Fabricio Coloccini – Top defender and fan favourite.
Steven Taylor – Injury plagued plays with heart.
James Perch – What were you thinking Chris Hughton?
Ryan Taylor – Not good enough to start.
Tamas Kadar – Promising defender must get fit.
James Tavernier – Great at Gateshead looks promising.

Midfielers
Kevin Nolan – Goals have been invaluable again.
Joey Barton – My player of the season.
Chiek Tiote – Can pass and tackle. Wow!
Jonas Gutierrez – Should score and assist more.
Danny Guthrie – Not a Premier League star.
Hatem Ben Arfa – Will he ever be same?
Alan Smith – Thanks but time to go.
Dan Gosling – Will be like new signing.
Wayne Routledge – Will he be going to QPR?
Shane Ferguson – He looks a fine talent.
Haris Vuckic – Future star needs more games.
Kazenga LuaLua – Brighton experience good for him.
Michael Richardson – Future battler in the midfield?
Ryan Donaldson – Looks to have impressed Pardew.

Forwards
Shola Amoebi – Love him or hate him?
Leon Best – According to him EPL quality.
Peter Lovenkrands – Squad player next season hopefully.
Nile Ranger – Too much gangster see ya.
Xisco – Adiós amigo finally this time.
Sammy Amoebi – There is only two Ameobi’s!
Phil Airey – Reserve top scorer big chance.

Pre-Season Review – How Are We Travelling?

Published by Row 'S' Army on August 12th, 2010 - in Season 2010/2011

The Charity Shield (or whatever it’s called these days) has been played so that can mean only one thing, pre-season is now over and the season proper is due to start this weekend.

So how has this pre-season been for Newcastle United ‘how are we travelling?’ to coin an Aussie saying.

To be honest I’m really not a fan of pre-season friendlies I find it hard to get excited about a series of meaningless games that have far too many substitutes to be taken seriously. At best they can take you overseas or to a new ground to watch the Toon play, at worst you watch a key player getting injured or the team getting humbled by a lower league team like we did at Leyton Orient a year ago.

Chris Hughton chose five pre-season friendlies this time around as well as a repeat of the 2009 ‘boot camp’ in Ireland. Victories over Carlisle United and Deportivo (if you include the penalties), plus a home draw against PSV on the anniversary of Sir Bobby’s death (RIP great man!) and defeats to Norwich City and Rangers is hardly awe inspiring form but it is not about the results.

What did we learn, well the key points are that Steven Taylor has a dodgy shoulder, Joey Barton really should shut up and let his feet do the talking, Hughton is going to play 4-5-1 away from home, Leon Best does know how to score but also how to get injured in training, and Peter Lovenkrands should slow down because ‘everybody hurts when you speed’, other than that it has been a useful exercise to get everyone up to match fitness.

On the transfer front Hughton has made three purchases so far signing James Perch, Dan Gosling and Sol Campbell.

Perch, without setting the pulse racing, should be a useful addition to the squad given his versatility and ability to play anywhere along the back four. The fact that he captained Nottingham Forest at a young age means he should add leadership to the dressing room.

The arrival of Campbell probably only occurred following the news that Steven Taylor would be out for 3 months after a shoulder injury obtained at Carlisle. Campbell’s experience and leadership will be invaluable to a defence that lacks a wealth of Premier League experience and pedigree.  Whether Campbell can last the full season and how he copes with the pacey strikers that litter the Premier League are the big question marks surrounding him.

The pick-up of Gosling on a free transfer could be a real steal as the talented midfielder will be an ideal replacement for Nicky Butt in that central midfield role. The 20-year-old is currently out injured, and realistically will be for most of 2010, so it’ll probably be next year before we see the real benefit of this signing.

Hughton has a few choices with the make-up of his regularly starting XI, Stephen Harper, Jose Enrique, Fabricio Coloccini, Wayne Routledge, Jonas Gutierrez, Kevin Nolan, and Andy Carroll would seem to pick themselves which means there are about 4 or 5 places up for grabs.

James Perch will get the first chance to cement his claim at the right-back spot with Danny Simpson still recovering from a post season operation which will keep him out until September, while Mike Williamson is set to partner Coloccini given the late arrival of Sol Campbell from honeymoon.

In midfield Joey Barton, Danny Guthrie and Alan Smith will be battling for the remaining centre midfield roles, which will be one spot at home and two spots away with Nolan playing in the advanced role. Upfront the injury to Leon Best in training this week means Peter Lovenkrands in now in pole position to partner Andy Carroll.

Special mentions to youngster James Tavernier, Haris Vuckic and Nile Ranger who proved there worth and didn’t look out of place when playing first-team football. 18-year-old Tavernier especially showed his ability and potential by performing well in two starts and coming off the bench in the other games.

So that is it pre-season is now over and the real stuff starts at Old Trafford at 5am (AEST) next Tuesday morning, watch out for a match preview closer to the kick-off.

Welcome to season 2010/2011

Published by Row 'S' Army on July 11th, 2010 - in Season 2010/2011

The new season is officially under way with the players returning to training on Monday (5th July) and after the disappointing World Cup for our two nations it is a pleasure to get back to all things Black & White.

The first week back has already thrown up a few talking points with Puma releasing our new home strip and James Perch signing from Nottingham Forest.

As home stripes go this one doesn’t seem too bad, but we haven’t seen the back of it yet or how it will look up close.

The club badge and Northern Rock sign do appear to look ironed on and hence look cheap, however I’ll reserve judgement for now.

Following on from the success of last year Chris Hughton has again taken the squad to Carton House near Dublin, Ireland for a pre-season boot camp. No friendly game this year (we played Shamrock Rovers last year) so for the players it all be about fitness work and team bonding. Photos so far on the official website show the players on bicycles and using boxing bags.

One new face in Ireland is James Perch who was signed from Nottingham Forest this week on a four-year deal. 24-year-old Perch is a versatile defender who can play anywhere along the back four, he played 220 games and was captain during his time at Forest.

Perch looked a decent enough player in the Championship last season and his versatility will make him a good addition to the squad. Whether he can make the step up to the Premiership we’ll have to wait and see, but at 24 he is a good age and is still young enough to improve.

It appears Perch may not be the only new player joining Newcastle United this pre-season with Dan Gosling heavily linked to a move to St James’ Park the 20-year-old midfielder has left Everton after a contract disagreement and would be available on a free transfer. Gosling has impressed since his arrival from Plymouth Argyle and that will naturally mean Newcastle will not be the only club interested in signing him. If we can win the race to sign him he will be an excellent addition to the squad.

Whatever happens it is great that real football is back especially with all the games being live on Foxsports in the Premier League. Howay The Lads!
