Post Match Comments:

Newcastle caretaker boss Chris Hughton:

"We had two very good chances early in the second half and didn't take them, and the two Spurs got, they were able to put away with good quality."
Listen in full to what Chris Hughton had to say afterwards

Tottenham manager Juande Ramos:
"Things were not going very well, but this victory has given us some peace of mind.

"It's certainly not a nice situation to be in.

"I believe we deserved to win tonight. In the first half, everything was equal and the two teams were playing at more or less the same level.

"But in the second half, we scored two goals and Michael Owen's goal came at the very end, so yes, we deserved to win."

  Match Report:
Two second half goals were enough to beat Newcastle United, and heap more pressure on the managerless Magpies, as they lost 2-1 to Tottenham in the Carling Cup.

Russian striker Roman Pavlyuchenko opened his account for the North Londoners with a 62nd-minute header past Shay Given after peeling away from Fabricio Coloccini to connect with Aaron Lennon's floated centre.

That lead was doubled within four minutes, Jamie O'Hara robbing Steven Taylor midway inside United's half before tucking past Shay Given.

Michael Owen did manage to give the Geordies hope when he scored from a spill by
Spurs goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, but to was to little to late.

With the lowest crowd for a competitive fixture at St James' Park in 16 years turning up, 20,577, the fans are voting with their feet.  The latest addition of The Mag has the front page headline of "Taxi for Ashley - We're not laughing any more", and after two frankly awful performances and results this week, the whole mood around the club has hit a new all time low.

The news that Terry Venables is considering taking over for a interim period surfaced the day after the game, whether he can have an impact on a squad with zero confidence remains to be seen, but it appears that whoever is the next manager they will need to do something rather special to turn around this runaway train.
