Post Match Comments:

Portsmouth manager Tony Adams:

"We're beating ourselves a bit at the moment - we're going to have to stop the mistakes and be a bit more resilient.

"The supporters want to see us going forward and playing entertaining football but if we're conceding goals then it's no good.

"Two areas to work on this week are personnel and tactics."

  Match Report:
Newcastle United recorded their first away win of the season, with an impressive 0-3 win over Portsmouth, which extends the Geordies unbeaten run to five games.

A scrappy first half saw Portsmouth create the more chances, with inform striking pair Jermaine Defoe and Peter Crouch guilty of squandering several good openings and Shay Given forced into a good reaction save from a deflected Niko Kranjcar's shot.

Habib Beye and Obefemi Martins did create two opportunities for the visitors, Beye rose highest from a Danny Guthrie free-kick to head wide unmarked and then a moment of brilliance nearly broke the deadlock.  Nicky Butt fed the ball to Martins who then unleashed a ferocious curling left foot effort that hit the post with David James well beaten.

The second half was a different story with the visitors dominating possession as Pomey looked to run out of ideas.

Michael Owen, who is still out of contract at the end of the season, opened the scoring for Newcastle on 52 minutes.

A poor ball was intercepted by Jonas Gutierrez who played Owen into the box, after a poor first touch Owen recovered superbly to chip the ball into the net over the advancing James and Sylvain Distin with his next touch.

Martins then doubled Newcastle’s advantage.  Jose Enrique picked up the ball on the left, cut inside and played the ball through to Martins in the box, who easily slotted home his strike past James from 5 yards.

In the second last minute, a fine second half display by Newcastle was rewarded with a quality team goal to make it three nil.

Substitute Shola Ameobi was played in deep down the right wing, the Geordie striker did well to beat his man and pull the ball back into the box, where the impressive Guthrie smashed a shot past James that the keeper should have done better with.

A first away win of the season (and only a second for 2008) makes a welcome change for the travelling Toon Army, who again sold out their away end, despite having to make the longest journey of the Premier League for a lunchtime live TV kick off only two weeks before Christmas.  When will the Premier League and the TV companies actually start to consider the fans?

However, it was a big three points for Newcastle as they moved out of the relegation zone, at the expense of the inbreds, and above Man City, West Ham and Tottenham into 14th place.

We do not have many victories to cheer about these days, so this small one should be savoured this week, as we still have a long battle ahead this season.
