  Kevin Keegan's pre-game comments:
"Obafemi Martins on his own up front is a handful for anybody, with his pace.  His leap for the goal against Manchester United at Old Trafford was nothing short of outstanding.  The opposition have got to put big guys on him because if they put someone of a similar size, he will beat them. I have never seen anybody leap like him.

Michael has trained with us for the last two days, and I'm going to put him on the bench. He's taken a big step forward, and, Michael being Michael, he's not a lad who takes a lot to get fit."

Match Preview:

Newcastle United’s home campaign starts this weekend with the visit of Bolton Wanderers to St James’ Park.

The Geordies will be looking to register their 1,000th post war league victory, and their 50th league victory over the Trotters.

For Bolton, after their 3-1 win against Stoke City on the opening weekend, they are aiming to win their first two fixtures of a Premier League season for the first time since 2001-02, when they kicked off with three straight victories.

However, the omens are not good for Wanderers, who have not won a seasonal opening away match in the Premier League since beating Leicester 0-5 on 18 August 2001; drawn one and lost four of the five subsequent initial fixtures on the road.

Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan will be buoyed after witnessing his side’s stellar performance at Old Trafford last week, where all three of Keegan’s new summer signings shone during the 1-1 draw against the champions.

With the encouraging news that Michael Owen has done enough in training this week to warrant a place on the bench, and the positive noises over the state of Steven Taylor’s ankle knock, it would appear Keegan will name an unchanged side.

Meaning, definitely missing for Newcastle are Mark Viduka (
Achilles), Andy Carroll (heel), Joey Barton (fitness), Wesley Ngo Baheng (knee), and doubts remain over Cacapa who picked up a injury last week.

Gary Megson doesn't have so many injuries worries, with only
Heidar Helguson (groin) a possible doubt.

Danny Guthrie and Andy O'Brien should face their former teams.  Guthrie spent a season-long loan with Bolton last term, making 35 appearance, whilst O'Brien played 120 games for Newcastle over 4 years, famously scoring a goal against the Mackems.

After his well-received on-pitch rendition of The Blaydon Races before last season's home derby, opera singer Graeme Danby makes a return visit to add to the pre-match entertainment.

From a Toon point of view, lets hope Danby inspirers both players and fans, and Newcastle continue where they left off last week at Old Trafford.  If we are to become a top 10 side, these games need to be won, meaning quick attacking tempo football and solid defending is what Keegan will be after again.

Bolton Wanderers FC was founded by the Reverend John Farrall Wright in 1874 as Christ Church FC.  However, it changed its name to Bolton Wanderers in 1877, meaning Bolton were one of the 12 founder members of the Football League, which formed in 1888.
