Pre-match comments:
|
| |
Striker Obafemi Martins said:
"Yeah, it has been difficult for me. To score my goal against West Brom
since the first goal of the season is a big relief. I hope to score
plenty of goals now to make up for lost time.
I take on board what the manager says but
if there is a better pass on, of course I will pass it. But if there is
a chance to be taken, I will be going for goal. I know what I have to do
now.
Shola always tries his best. He has
scored two goals in the last few games and won us a penalty.
We play well together and have a good
understanding on and off the field. I think we can score goals together.
We must work together and make this
partnership work. We need to continue our winning streak, and the home
games are the best chance to do that.
It's good to go into this one knowing
we won our last match. We are confident and looking forward to Aston
Villa." |

Match Preview: |
| |
Newcastle United take on
Aston Villa in the Monday night clash at St James' Park, looking to win
two consecutive league games for the first time this season.
The Magpies will be buoyed after their first Premiership win since
August against West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday night. Goals from
Joey Barton and Obefemi Martins gave interim manager Joe Kinnear his
first win.
Aston Villa are unbeaten in four games and current sit in 5th place in
the league, and a victory at St James' Park would see them move up above
Manchester United and Arsenal into 3rd place.
Newcastle look to welcome back Michael Owen and Nicky Butt from injury.
Both have returned to training and manager Kinnear is hopefully of using
both experienced players in some capacity on Monday.
Mark Viduka and Alan Smith remain on the long term absentee list, while
reports suggest Xisco has picked up a groin injury, meaning he joins
fellow transfer deadline day signing Nacho
Gonzalez on the
sidelines.
Aston Villa have a doubt
over midfielder Stiliyan Petrov with a hamstring injury and they will
give a late fitness test to midfielder Steve Sidwell, while striker John
Carew is hoping for a recall to the starting line-up.
Despite Villa being in tremendous form and starting the game as
favourites, Newcastle have some what the wood over their Midlands
opponents since the Premier League started.
Newcastle have won 50% of their Premier League matches against Aston
Villa, 15 of 30 games. Villa have once won twice at St James' Park and
have only recorded one victory in eight Premier League visits to
Tyneside.
After the disaster that was last Saturday, Newcastle have bounced back
in positive fashion, but wins for both Stoke City and Tottenham Hotspur
this weekend, means the Toon are currently second bottom of the league
and in desperate need to continue to pick up some points.
What price a Owen winner on his return to fitness? |
