Match Comments:
Newcastle
manager Kevin Keegan said:
"It wasn't a classic. We
never really got going as a team but the fact we won it tells you we
have players like Michael Owen who can get us something. The scoreline
of 2-0 was maybe about right but Sunderland fans might say it slightly
flattered us. It was a hard game and we were never on easy street
despite the early goal and one just before half-time."
Listen to everything Kevin Keegan said
Sunderland manager Roy Keane:
"We were OK but we know OK is not good enough. We gave two bad goals
away. We got better in the second half but the game was probably over at
half-time. We lost three players this week but you can't make excuses
like that. I thought we were strong enough to get a result but we gave
them a helping hand in terms of goals we gave away."

Match Report: |

Two first half
goals from Michael Owen was enough for Newcastle to win the
139th Tyne Wear derby.
Newcastle was far too good for its visitors, outclassing
Sunderland for the vast majority of the encounter, as they
extended their unbeaten run to six games.
The match was played to a bad drop of a wall of noise, as the
Toon Army showed unanimous backing to Kevin Keegan’s resurgent
side.
Only four minutes in and those fans were rewarded. A great
right wing cross from Geremi was expertly met by Owen, whose
fine headed finish made it 1-0. It was a superb run by Owen,
who ran from deep to get in front of his marker in the box.

For the
rest of the first half Newcastle dominated the Black Cats, who
failed to produce any major attacking threat.
It was not until the final minute of the half till Newcastle
doubled the lead. Some good interplay between Mark Viduka and
Owen saw Owen jink into the box, only for his ball to be stopped
by the hand of defender Danny Higginbotham.
Owen’s penalty conversion was average at best, the strike went
straight down the centre and hit goalkeeper Craig Gordan, but it
was not enough to spot the shot, only deflecting the ball into
the corner of the goal.

The second half saw
Newcastle take their foot off the gas a little and Sunderland improve on
their woeful first. However, the visitors were still incapable of
posing any major threat. Striker Kenwyne Jones appeared to be their
only real hope of salvaging anything from the match, but his only
goalscoring attempt was expertly saved by Steve Harper.
Kevin Keegan’s men were deserved winners, and the only real surprise
being the fact that they did not go on to ram home their supremacy.
