Post Match Comments:

Everton manager David Moyes on talks over a new contract:

"I'm relaxed about the situation. This board has always backed me and I don't expect that to change. We deserved to finish fifth, we have been in the top five since the new year and we finished on a good note. We got word that Aston Villa were leading but the players kept to their job, and all credit to them."

Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan:
"If ever we needed a team to look at we were in the right place today. If Everton can finish fifth, why can't we? We have a bigger stadium and more fans, but they all play for each other and that's the spirit we don't have. If we can get that with the players we've got there's no reason we can't challenge for that spot next season."

  Match Report:

Despite a Michael Owen penalty to level up the scores just after half time, Newcastle were unable to hold on as Everton ran out 3-1 winners to secure 5th place and a UEFA Cup spot.

Manager Kevin Keegan used the last game of the season to revert to a 4-4-2 formation, handing recent rare starts to Andy Carroll, Damien Duff, Alan Smith, and Charles N’Zogbia, in place of Joey Barton, Geremi, Obafemi Martins, and Mark Viduka.

Sadly, this match was not televised in Australia because more important games on the last day of the season were shown in preference.

Apart from on-line radio commentary (which I did not listen too), our only insight into this game have been 2 minutes of highlights on the weekly Premiership show.  Therefore, I will not attempt to interpret a game I did not see.

A slightly sad end to the season, with two defeats, but the big picture is a lot brighter than it was a few months.

Despite what you may read in the press, everyone at the club is united, and are gearing up for what looks like being a busy close season.  With the first games of next season only 13 weeks away, there is not much time for us all to switch off, before we do it all again next season.

A massive thank you to all Aussie Mags who have read the match reports this season, I hope you all have enjoyed reading them (well at some stage at least!).  I do intend to improve them and the match previews further next season, therefore if you have any suggestions, or comments in general, please e-mail me at
macky@newcastle-fanatic.com

I would also like to thank you all for your contribution you have made to the forum this season.  Everyone’s enthusiastic comments and lively debate has again been the lifeblood of Aussie Mags.  Please do not stop because the season is over, this close season will ‘hopefully’ be one of the most interesting in years.

So cheers from Row ‘S’ Army and all the mods!
