SEASON REVIEW – 2007/2008
  MIDFIELDERS

  EMRE

Age: 27
Contract Expiry: 2010

Played: 17 (9) Goals: 1 Yellow Cards: 2 Red Cards: 1

For the Turkish international, it was another disappointing season plagued with injury and inconsistency.

With so much talent and potential, it is far to say that Emre has not really lived up to his reputation in the three years he has spent on Tyneside.  On his day a genuine world-beater, who can turn the game with a touch of brilliance, but too often he can go missing during a game, especially away from home.

A red card will hardly have helped his cause, and with him being sent off to Euro 2008 early, it remains to be seen whether he will be in the manager’s plans for next season.

  JOEY BARTON

Age: 25
Contract Expiry: 2012

Played: 23 (3) Goals: 1 Yellow Cards: 4 Red Cards: 0

The controversial Liverpudlian once again had more headlines off the field than on.  An alleged incident whilst back home in Liverpool last December, saw Barton arrested and spend time in jail.  He was later released on bail, facing charges of assault and is banned from entering Liverpool city.

On the field, his season got off to the worst possible start when he broke a toe in a pre-season game away to Carlisle.  When he finally made his first team debut in October, he lacked fitness, and took weeks to get settle into any decent rhythm.

Under Keegan however, he finally started to find some form and play a positive role in the team.  He does still have plenty to work and improve on, but that could all become irrelative now he has been sentenced to six months in jail.

  DAMIEN DUFF

Age: 29
Contract Expiry: 2011

Played: 19 (4) Goals: 1 Yellow Cards: 3 Red Cards: 0

Damien Duff, or Duffy Duck as he is famously called by someone on the forum, is somebody else who again had their season hampered by injury and lack of form.

Injuries have taken there toll on the Irish international as it is clear he has lost a yard or two of pace.  I cannot remember the last time he took on and beat a fullback, which was his major asset whilst at Blackburn and Chelsea.

It would appear to be an opinion shared by manager Kevin Keegan, who has restricted most of his appearances from the bench.

Unless an offer comes out of the blue he will be here next season, but he will need a dramatic return to form if he is too become a regular starter.

  CHARLES N'ZOGBIA

Age: 21
Contract Expiry: 2012

Played: 37 (3) Goals: 3 Yellow Cards: 5 Red Cards: 0

The talented young Frenchman was again our major attacking threat from midfield.  However, his skill and pace was utilised more often than not from left back, dulling his ability to influence the game as much as previous seasons.

With talk of N’Zogbia wanting to move to London gathering pace, it would appear that he could well leave this summer.  Question marks surrounding his wiliness to be at the club have been in the background ever since the dressing room bust up at the last game of the season last year.  It would be a sorry end to his Newcastle career, but the simple fact is if he does not want to be on Tyneside, and we get a good price, then he must be allowed to move on for the benefit of both parties.

  JAMES MILNER

Age: 22
Contract Expiry: 2011

Played: 32 (4) Goals: 3 Yellow Cards: 3 Red Cards: 0

His inconsistent delivery of quality crosses is starting to raise questions about whether he has the ability to become a genuine top Premiership player.  At 22 and the given the fact that puts in 100% ever game, means there is plenty of room for optimism that he can learn and improve his game.

He will be part of Keegan plans for next season, but depending on summer transfers, and how his pre-season goes, he may not be guaranteed to starting place week in week out.

  GEREMI

Age: 29
Contract Expiry: 2010

Played: 28 (3) Goals: 2 Yellow Cards: 3 Red Cards: 0

The former captain had a mixed first season.  The decision to appoint him as captain, because he could speak numerous languages, was questionable at least, but it was more his inability to contribute much in midfield that raised more eyebrows before Christmas.

It was apparent to all that he had lost a yard of pace, meaning a wide midfield role was counter productive to the teams attacking threat.  His free kicks at times did show a glimmer of past glories, but that in itself was not enough to justify a team selection.

After returning from the African Cup of Nations Geremi regained his place in Keegan’s new 3-man midfield, as the role was more central and not so attacking, it suited the Cameroon international.

Keegan should be looking elsewhere for midfielders, if we are to become a top 10 side, but given his experience Geremi will be a useful member of the squad when called upon.

  NICKY BUTT

Age: 32
Contract Expiry: 2009

Played: 39 (2) Goals: 3 Yellow Cards: 13 Red Cards: 0

Mr consistent was one of the stand out players, and will be on everyone’s shortlist for player of the year.  At times Butt rolled back the years and performed at the peak of his powers, protecting the back 4 with his ball winning ability and simple, but precise, passing.

He does comes across as a quiet man, however when he does speak the players listen and respect what he has too say.

A long-term replacement will need to be found but for next season at least, Nicky Butt will be one of the first names on the team sheet.

  KAZENGA LUALUA

Age: 17
Contract Expiry: 200TBC

Played: 5 (5) Goals: 0 Yellow Cards: 0 Red Cards: 0

The youngster will be pleased to have been involved in the first team so early in his career.

His aim for next season will be to improve in the reserves, by becoming even more influential and consistent.  If he does not stagnate, it would appear he has a chance of a future at the football club.

  JAMES TROISI

Age: 19
Contract Expiry: 2008

Played: 0 Goals: 0 Yellow Cards: 0 Red Cards: 0

The Ollyroo will head off to the Olympics in search of a new club, after he was released at the end of his contract.

After an encouraging pre-season, the Australian then appeared to stagnate in the reserves and never really threaten to make the big break through.  As a result, he was allowed to go on trial in January to Roda JC of the Dutch Eredivisie, but after failing to impress he was sent back.
