SEASON REVIEW – 2007/2008
  DEFENDERS

  STEPHEN CARR

Age: 32
Contract Expiry: 2008

Played: 12 (2) Goals: 0 Yellow Cards: 0 Red Cards: 0

Injuries and a lack of form have hampered most of his Newcastle career, and this season was no different.

The Irish International looks to be unable to play at the highest level of the Premiership these days.  Any pace he did have appears to have gone following his string of injuries, and his waistline looks to be the only thing that has strengthened this season.

He did not featured in the team during its resurgence and Keegan felt he was surplus for requirements.

  JOSE ENRIQUE

Age: 22
Contract Expiry: 2012

Played: 28 (5) Goals: 0 Yellow Cards: 1 Red Cards: 0

The Spanish U21 international has had a mixed first season in England.  For parts of the season both former manager Sam Allardyce and Kevin Keegan decided to protect the young Spaniard in favour of playing Charles N’Zogbia at left back.

However, a run of 10 (check exact amount) straight games to the end of the season saw Enrique show some glimpses of his potential.

He still has a lot learn to be good enough, but at only 22 he has a future at the club, however another left-back will need to brought in to give him the competition he needs to improve his game even further.

  DAVID ROZENHAL

Age: 27
Contract Expiry: 2011

Played: 29 (3) Goals: 0 Yellow Cards: 0 Red Cards: 0
(Including on loan at Lazio)

It appears the move to Tyneside will be a disastrous one for Rozenhal.  A string of poor performances saw his stocks fall so low that new manager Kevin Keegan sent him out on loan to Serie A side Lazio in January.

If that was not bad enough for the Czech international, an ill-advised parting shot to both Keegan and the club left a bad taste in the mouth for both parties.  Given his lack of appearances for Lazio towards the end of the season, his future in Italy looks bleak, which could leave him in limbo this summer.

  CACAPA

Age: 31
Contract Expiry: 2009

Played: 22 (3) Goals: 2 Yellow Cards: 2 Red Cards: 0

The Brazilian international arrived from Lyon with a reputation as a quality defender, with plenty of European experience, but ultimately he failed to fit into the physical riggers of the English game.

Performances, injuries, and his age will work against Cacapa, as Kevin Keegan will no doubt look elsewhere for a long-term centre-half.

  LAMINE DIATTA

Age: 32
Contract Expiry: 2008

Played: 2 (2) Goals: 0 Yellow Cards: 0 Red Cards: 0

A squad player brought in by Keegan to fill in a short-term gap.

RELEASED

  HABIB BEYE

Age: 31
Contract Expiry: 2010

Played: 30 (2) Goals: 1 Yellow Cards: 5 Red Cards: 0

He is one of the very few highlights of Sam Allardyce’s time here, and will no doubt be on the short list for player of the season.

The experienced Senegalese international quickly settled into the demands of the Premier League and became our first choice right back.  His stirring defensive work and ability to read the game, was also complemented by his ability to over lap down the right flank and create attacking chances.

  ABDOULAYE FAYE

Age: 30
Contract Expiry: 2010

Played: 24 (2) Goals: 1 Yellow Cards: 5 Red Cards: 0

The big Senegalese international showed that he was more than a useful Premier League centre-half.  His consistent performances were a breathe of fresh air to what was at times, a brittle defence.

He will certainly be part of Keegan’s plans for next season, but depending on the quality of defenders brought in, he may not be guaranteed a first team spot.

  PETER RAMAGE

Age: 24
Contract Expiry: 2008

Played: 3 (3) Goals: 0 Yellow Cards: 0 Red Cards: 0

A season ended knee injury away at Middlesbrough wrecked any chances of earning a regular spot in the team.

With his contract up for renewal and no guarantee of first team football next season, it was agreed it would be best for both parties if he moved on.

RELEASED

  STEPHEN TAYLOR

Age: 22
Contract Expiry: 2009

Played: 36 (1) Goals: 1 Yellow Cards: 2 Red Cards: 0

This was another decent, if not spectacular, season for the England U21 international.  Taylor certainly gave 110% at all times, and under extreme pressure, he was seen never to give in.

However, mistakes were still a factor in his game at times, and he is perhaps at a cross roads in his career.  At 22, and with over a 100 games to his name, he will now be expected to start stepping up his performances to the next level on a more consistent basis.

Questions surrounding whether he will sign an extended correct continue to hover in the background, and it will be intriguing to see where he stands at the club next season.

  DAVID EDGAR

Age: 20
Contract Expiry: 2009

Played: 6 (4) Goals: 1 Yellow Cards: 2 Red Cards: 0

The young Canadian saw comparatively more first team action this season than the previous.

It remains to be seen whether he will be physically strong enough, and possesses the level of quality required to play regularly in the Premiership, but with defenders Carr, Diatta and Ramage already leaving the club, his role as a squad player and reserve team captain, will be ever more important next season.
