  Match Report:

They came, they saw, they fell asleep. 30,083 hardly soles turned up at St James’ Park, for what was in affect a ‘meaning less’ game. Paying £20 ($50) a ticket for the privilege, they witnessed a Newcastle United team going through the motions as if it was a practice match but in the end doing enough to win 1-0.

If you take into consideration the fact that only 25,124 turned up for Blackburn Rovers v
Bayer Leverkusen, which was a tie still in the balance, the strength and depth (mainly in their pockets) of the Toon Army can’t be taken lightly.

Quite frankly, this type of game is an example of where the two-legged cup format fails. With the Belgians very happy to have 10 men behind the ball for vast periods of the game, despite the fact that they needed goals, just goes to prove how pointless this game was.

For one man this game wasn’t meaning less or pointless, Albert Luque was given a chance to impress by starting ahead of Antoine Sibierski, who was rested because of a tight hamstring. The transporters were out in force to witness such a rare outing but like so many hyped up events, it was an anti-climax in the extreme. BBC Radio Newcastle’s commentary team was very disparaging of his performance to say the least and the comments on nufc.com reflected the same view. Why a player finally given a start, would chose to stroll around the pitch with little enthusiasm will no doubt have not gone unnoticed by the vast majority of the fans and more importantly Glenn Roeder.

Some positives can be taken out of the game however, finally a clean sheet, Titus Bramble having another good game and
Obafemi Martins continuing his goal scoring form. Twenty games unbeaten at home in the UEFA Cup now and with AZ Alkmaar the next opponents in last 16, let’s hope we can say it’s twenty one by the end of 8th March.
