  Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder said:
"I'm very pleased to come away from anywhere in Europe with a win, but I was disappointed we conceded. We should have done better with the free kick that led to the goal and not giving a foul away would have helped. It was a relatively comfortable win, but we were sloppy at times and that disappointed me."

  Match Report:

Dyer & Martins both
played well
As expected, the part-time Belgium outfit, Zulte-Waregem, didn't cause us too many problems, as we ran out 3-1 winners.

In the first half there wasn't too many chances but the best fell to Martins, who should have scored. A Solano cross picked out Martins in the box and his shot from six yards was saved by the goalkeeper.

The second half saw us up the tempo and show the difference in class between the sides.  Two minutes into the half, Kieron Dyer broke at pace down the right hand side of the area, fired in a excellent low cross which defender Frederic Dindeleux could only direct into the net.

Twelve minutes later Damien Duff dribbled into the box and was brought down. Some people have said it was a penalty and some people aren't so sure. Either way the referee thought it was and that's all that matters. Solano left the penalty for Martins to take, he easily lashed the ball home, for his thirteenth goal of the season.

That seemed to be that but Newcastle being Newcastle, they gave us a little scare when they let
Zulte-Waregem back into the game. In the sixty ninth minute, a right-wing free kick from Loris Reina's was flicked past Harper by D'Haene. That was the first goal we have conceded away from home in Europe all season, however, worryingly that means it's seventeen games without a clean sheet now.

We didn't have to worry for too long, as Antoine Sibierski put the game beyond doubt seven minutes later. After picking up a pass from Martins on the edge of the area, Sibierski nutmegged a defender before rounding Merlier to score a classy goal. He certainly has been our cup specialist this season, with five of his eight goals so far, coming in cup competitions.

A professional job still needs to be done next Thursday to make sure we aren't complacent but all in all, it certainly was a job well done. Our European experience and pedigree is raising every year and we do seem to be very much at home playing this two legged format.
