Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder said
“It was very satisfying and I thought we played extremely
well. There was no doubt we deserved the win and we should have been in
front at half time with the couple of chances we had in the first half.
It was a very professional job done by a team which is very motivated
and very together. I wouldn't normally want to single anyone out, but
there is one because he broke his duck today and got his first goal, and
that was Obafemi Martins.
He cost £10 million, he's come from Inter Milan, he's a young player
who's 21 and not a player with great experience, although he's come from
a great club. When you are 21 and come to a club like Newcastle, it's
tough, and all the boys were willing him to get that goal. His finishing
in training is sensational and you will see some great goals from him
over the next few seasons. He is a serious finisher. He was getting a
little uptight at not getting that goal, but he has showed a cool head
with the way he slotted it in.“ |

Match Report: |

| |
 |
Two second half goals by Damien Duff and Obafemi Martins
was enough to beat West Ham 2 nil on Sunday. However, the win was soured
with the news that Shay Given had to spend the night in hospital, after
a collision with Marlon Harewood, left him in extreme
abdominal pain.
Both Titus Bramble and Steven Taylor failed late fitness tests, so Peter
Ramage started alongside Craig Moore, Celestine Babayaro decided he was
fit and Shola Ameobi returned to the starting XI instead of goal hero
Sibierski.
West Ham probably edged the first half, with
Carlos Tevez hitting Given’s
crossbar from a free-kick and Bowyer narrowly missed with a speculative
lob, after a poor clearance. 0-0 at half time.
The second half was a different story, as we played much
better, dominating the home side. Damien Duff gave us the lead on 50
minutes. Martins won the ball 30 yards from his own goal and sped down
the pitch before laying a pass into the path of the supporting Duff, who
fired in his first for the Magpies past Carroll from the edge of the
area. |

On 75 minutes, Martins capitalised on a misunderstanding between Lee
Bowyer(cheers mate!) and Danny Gabbidon to coolly slot home from just
inside the area. Great news that both our big summer signings got their
first goals in a black & white shirt and the game was effectively over
at this point. |

Sadly five minutes from time Marlon Harewood
collided with Shay Given, leaving the keeper in extreme
abdominal pain and forcing Steve Harper to replace him. Later it
was revelled that an ambulance had to called, as Given was
struggling to breathe in the dressing room and he ending up
spent the night in a London hospital.
