  Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder said:
"It was the poorest performance since I've been back involved with the first team. We can't have any more like that. I can understand the fans being disappointed as we didn't perform anywhere near the level we can. It is very difficult to take any positives out of the whole of the 90 minutes of that match"

  Match Report:
When I checked in at Melbourne Airport I was able to get legroom seats (sitting at one of the wing exits) making the journey home a lot more comfortable and when my flight arrived 20 minutes early into Newcastle, from Heathrow, meaning I was able to be at St James' Park only 10-15 minutes after kick off, I thought this was my lucky day.

As I walked up the steps to the top of the Gallowgate I looked around seeing the usual familiar faces and when I arrived at row s I was greeted with "what the hell are you doing here", "sh*t when did you get back", "great to see you". I quickly asked the lad in my old season ticket seat if he would move, which he was more than happy to do, so with this good weird feeling it felt like I'd never been away and I sat their with a massive smile on my face.

After a quick chat with the lads next to me about how they were doing and how Australia had been, I was back into the swing of things. I can't remember which chant I started off first but I remember being pleased that everyone joining in.

The game itself we all know about, it was awful. We struggled to break down the Sheffield Utd defence and other than James Milner we looked very poor. Half time came and I darted down with the two lads next to me to have a quick couple of pints. As the lager on sale at SJP is Fosters, they laughed said  "you'll be used to drinking this", so I explained nobody has drank Fosters for over 20 years in OZ and that it's all VB and Carlton in Melbourne. (I suspect that won't be the last time I'll have to explain that whilst I'm back home)

The second half Newcastle were attacking the Gallowgate End and that's how I've always liked it. I've read somewhere (however I may have made it up!!) that we have scored more goals at the Gallowgate End since being in the Premiership, so my confidence was high for a win.

The atmosphere was canny in the first 20 minutes of the second half, the fans really got behind the team, despite not much encouragement from what they were seeing. My voice which is well out of practice, however, was starting to become very horse and will need to be improved on for Man City away next Saturday or I could struggle singing for 90 minutes.

Danny Webber's 68 minutes goal and Sheff Utd's 1st away goal this season, turned everything pear shaped. Instantly the atmosphere changed inside the ground, people became negative and the support stopped.

What happened the next 20 minutes are so were sad and sickening. Loud chants of "
Shepherd Out!" started but with some people, including me, trying to start counter chants of "Newcastle, Newcastle, Newcastle". I have no issue with people wanted to vent their angry towards him but during the 90 minutes of football this doesn't help anyone. Sadly that wasn't the worst thing, at least a couple of fights broke out in the bottom tier of the Gallowgate End (I've later heard in the Leazes End also) presumably between people chanting "Shepherd Out!" and people wanted everyone to support the team on the pitch.

Regardless of what happens over the next 6 months to a year, whether Shepherd leaves, Roeder leaves or they both leave, let's hope the club can finally moves forward and become the club we know it should be.

Dispute everything it still felt great to be back because you support the club win, lose or draw. This may be the biggest crisis we've faced since the 1991/92 season but Newcastle upon Tyne and Newcastle United are two very special things and if I didn't 100% know that before I left, I certainly do now.
