Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder on speculation about his future said:
"
Down the years Newcastle have always been an easy target for speculation - it happened with Graeme Souness, Bobby Robson and now me. It's the same with the players - any time a player wants to leave a club people speculate that he wants to join Newcastle United. That's the animal and that's how it is. I certainly don't lose one second's sleep over it. I've been through too many things in my life to worry about speculation. I am not worried at all. But I'm not surprised by things like this."

  Match Report:

Michael Owen makes a scoring return but sadly he was offside.

After over a year in charge of Newcastle United(including as caretaker) Glenn Roeder finally got to put the name of Michael Owen down in his starting XI, with the Madejski Stadium Reading, the venue that saw the long awaited comeback of record signing Owen. With Shola Ameobi also being named amongst the substitutes, there were plenty of positives to be had before the game started.

Owen started the game looking amazingly sharp and after 60 seconds he nearly got on the end of a James Milner cross but 7 minutes into the game Owen did find the back of the net, for what looked like a dream comeback. A neat through ball on the edge of the box by Obafemi Martins played in Owen, who coolly slotted the ball into the back of the net as if he’d never been away. Sadly for Owen and us, it was ruled offside and the replays showed he was offside but only just(on another day that goal who have stood).

We started the game quite brightly playing a 4-3-3 formation, which saw Antoine Sibierski in an advanced centre midfield role, with Kieron Dyer, Emre and James Milner making up the 3 other midfield berths. It looked as though we had come to attack Reading(shame we didn’t try that in Holland) as the action was fast paced and open, with us creating some half decent chances and dominating possession. Milner saw a long range dipping effort just go over the bar and Martins mistimed a free header from a corner, when he should have hit the target but the later part of the half saw both teams cancel each other out and the score stayed 0-0 at half time.

The 2nd half wasn’t so good however, with Emre, Dyer and Bramble all falling back into mistake mode. At times Emre couldn’t find a Black & White shirt and Dyer just went missing in a deep midfield role. It was Dyer who cheaply gave away the ball that lead to the attack that Reading scored from. A cross into the box found an unmarked Kitson at the back post and he smashed home a volley. Sibierski was forced off after injuring his wrist in a scrambled effort to block Kitson’s effort. With the news he was heading to hospital for x-rays on a suspected broken arm, it looks like hihs season is over.

The goal did mean we sparked ourselves into some form of life, as Shola Ameobi(who’d come on for Sibierski) headed a glorious chance straight at the keeper. Another night and a couple of games under his belt, you’d fancy he would have buried it. However, wasteful finishing seemed the order of the night as Martins also made a mess of a free header as we sprung Reading's offside trap again.

Overall you’d have to say it was a disjointed performance, which did promise a lot more than we got out of the game. Michael Owen playing 90 minutes was a major bonus, so too the return of Shola Ameobi and throw in some good defending by Steven Taylor, meant there were some positives. However, the worrying form of Kieron Dyer, the terrible Emre, the awkward Sibierski in midfield, the poor crossing and the return of defensive mistakes(yes of course by Bramble) meant Roeder will again have learnt a lot more about which players he needs to ship out this close season.
