Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder said
"He has
been very patient waiting for an opportunity. He will certainly get
plenty of opportunities between now and the end of December. It was a
fantastic finish. I would expect him to finish there because I have seen
it so often. I have seen it in games when he was at Manchester United,
whether it was his opportunities in the first team or in reserve-team
football. He is, in my opinion, a natural goalscorer, and he worked so
hard for the team as well. He was a real pain for their defence." |

Match Report: |
|

Debut
goal for Rossi. |
A much needed
win, clean sheet and morale boaster was served up at St James'
Park.
Torrential rain all day made the pitch sodden but
definitely not unplayable, as some reports suggested. We coped
much better with the conditions and played decent football
against, what looked like, a disinterested Portsmouth side.
The first 45 minutes were pretty fruitless other than some
stirring challenges from Babayaro, Butt, Solano and N'Zogbia.

Martins had been replaced by Duff at half
time and we came out looking like a different side, Rossi got his first
start upfront and in the 2 minutes into the second half scored his debut
goal.
A free-kick was eventually played to Taylor who went
crashing to the ground under a challenge. While others appealed and the
Pompey defence stood still, Rossi swivelled and hit a low drive beyond
James at the Gallowgate End.
Three minutes later Duff once again scampered down the left and his
cross was perfect for Solano to thunder an unstoppable header into the
roof of the net - his momentum taking him sliding into the advertising
hoardings. Cue more celebrations and relieving of frustrations for both
players and fans.
60 minutes in and Kieron Dyer made his first appearance of the season
replacing Nicky Butt. This was a welcome surprise as press reports had
said Roeder would probably hold him back for the Charlton game on
Saturday. He ran at defenders and looked dangerous, given our team a new
dimension but he did looked shattered after a few long runs. More
fitness work is required before we see a full effective 90 minutes from
him I reckon.
In the last minute a clearance ricocheted to Solano, who was 6 yards
out, and he couldn't miss. 3-0 and job well done.
The better opposition will test us in the coming weeks but we just a
victory, any victory and we got that, so that's all that matters.
