  Post Match Comments:
  Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder said
"Parts of our play were quite rusty but we'll eradicate that.  This game will do us the world of good. The boys are going to be a lot sharper next week. They have got the away goal and so we know what we are going to have to do. It's very important because we want the club in the Uefa Cup."

  Albert Luque said
"I am very happy to have scored the goal - maybe the new shirt will bring me some luck. Last season, the number 20 was not good for me. I got the injury in my second game, and it was a tough season. Now I have the number seven shirt, hopefully things will be better for me now."

  Match Report:

A few goals by Luque wouldn't go a miss this season.

A well taken goal by Albert Luque went a little way to save our blushes against Lillestrom, as a ring rusty looking Newcastle United drew 1-1 at St James’ Park in the 1st leg.

The Norwegian side took the initiative from the off-set and instantly looked a more fitter, well-drilled and confident team. Their height at set pieces were also causing, a shaky looking Newcastle back 4, all sorts of problems. Twenty one minutes into the first half, a shot by Robert Koren deflected off Steven Taylor into the back of the net, leaving Shay Given with no chance and sending the 200 or so travelling fans into ecstasy.

The goal was nothing more than Lillestrom deserved, having already tested Given’s goal a number of times and had a shot cleared off the line by Celestine Babayaro.

We looked like a team playing their first game of pre-season but sadly this wasn’t your usual first pre-season friendly, this was a make or break European game.  With the back four looking unorganised, the midfield(Scott Parker apart) drifted in and out of the game and the make shift striker force ineffective, things had to change.

Whatever Glenn Roeder said in the dressing room at half time had the desired effect, as we came out for the second half with more urgency and only five minutes in Albert Luque scored our equaliser. James Milner fed Luque who skipped past a defender and stroked a lovely left foot shot into the back of the net at the Gallowgate End.

Hopefully a change of luck and fortunes for Luque then and given our current striker crises this is exactly what the doctor ordered. Nobody doubts the lad has shown he has talent in Lia Liga but whether Souness’ panic buy can live up to that in the much faster paced Premiership we’ll have to wait and see. One thing is for certain he owes it to himself, the fans, the manager and the chairman to show the right attitude and to start to play well in the first team.

After the equaliser we dominated possession without really threatening to score again. Only in the last few seconds did substitute Alan O’Brien almost make himself the unlikely hero but his shot went just wide of the goal and the game finished 1-1.

A disappointing result given the importance of European football for the club, however, it was always going to a tough task to play a team half way through their domestic season with no friendly matches under our belt. We now have less than seven days for the lads to get much fitter, remove the ring rustiness and become more organised.

We’ve all missed this haven’t we? Come on, it wouldn’t be Newcastle United if we did things the easy way man.
