  Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder said
“Shola should not have been out there. He actually hurt his ankle on Thursday in training, and on Thursday night he didn't have any chance of playing. But that sums up Shola, and what he is all about. He did it for me last year from February onwards with a nasty hip problem. He got seven goals in 14 games, which is excellent.

On the day of the game, he had a fitness test and at best he was 80 per cent fit. I thought if we could get him to half time we'd have done well, and the fact we got to 70 minutes with him is a testament to him. Shola has seen an opportunity with Alan retired and Michael injured, he knows he has an opportunity to lay claims for one of the striking roles. I have great belief in him. I know the problems he has had when he shouldn't be playing, but he wants to go out there for the team and I'm very pleased with him.

"
I had a few problems with my ankle. It was touch and go if I would play but I've come through it. With the lack of striking options we had, I had to put myself in there. All of this year's work could have been undone today. With Alan Shearer retiring and Michael Owen injured, this is the ideal opportunity for me to be the main man at Newcastle. I know the club are looking to sign new strikers, but if I can keep doing it then hopefully I will make myself a regular and the manager can't drop me."

  Match Report:

Shola bagged a first half brace to ease our nerves.

A game that could make or break our season, thankfully went without a hitch. The Newcastle United that Glenn Roeder got playing so well at the end of last season did turn up, as we swept aside Lillestrom 0-3 in Olso.

The news before kick off was that Albert Luque was out with blisters, meaning an unfit Shola Ameobi was thrown into the starting XI by manager Roeder. Craig Moore was also back in the squad and took a place on the bench. We played a predominately 4-5-1 formation, with Milner down the left, N’Zobia in the middle and Emre behind the lone striker Shola.

We started brightly, looking like a weeks extra training had made a big difference, and from a second minute Emre free-kick which Milner fired a loose ball wide, we seemed in control.

In the 29th minute the deadlock was broken. A free-kick from 25 or so yards out was teed up for N’Zogbia, who fired a shot goal ward that the keeper could only parry out to Ameobi, he then took the ball past a defender before coolly slotting the ball home.

After that goal we really turned the pressure on with both Milner and Emre having chances to double our lead. However, we didn’t have to wait long, as 7 minutes later Scott Parker ran onto a Steve Carr's pass down the right wing, where he whipped the ball into the box for Ameobi to force the ball home at the far post. 0-2 and game over.

The second half naturally saw Lillestrom attack and chase the game but our defence held tight and Shay Given’s goal was rarely threatened.

Craig Moore, Nicky Butt and Matty Pattison were all given second half run outs as we strolled through the second half.

A very professional performance was rounded off by Emre in the last minute, to the delight of the travelling Toon Army behind the goal. Receiving a pass from Steven Taylor, he jinked inside his man and fired home a lovely shot from just outside the box.

Overall a fantastic result for the boys and a performance which should have everyone feeling a little bit more confident. Added to the fact our first major signing of the season(Damien Duff) also happened at the weekend and with talk of more signings this week, or at least before 19th August, things are finally starting to look a bit more positive.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed we kick on from here and start this Premiership season well for once and not be chasing our tails come September.

The draw for the UEFA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round takes place this Friday(28th) at 1:30pm(CET)  in Switzerland, so that’s 9:30pm(AEST) Friday night for us here in Australia.
