  Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder said:
"We had several half chances after that and I think the game was summed up when Michael (Owen) did everything right when rounding the keeper and hits a fantastic shot and the defender does well to get back and head it off the line. We have had plenty of opportunities and are not sticking them in the back of the net...I have had two or three meetings (with the chairman) already and there are more planned”

I think you'll find you only have one more meeting to go to, Glenn.

Says it all sadly
Pieman's Leazes View:

People would argue that there was nothing to play for with this game, unfortunately for Mr Roeder he was playing for his career.  When Owen's name was read out in the starting line up a massive cheer rang out around the ground.  This was to be the last cheer to be heard this season.

We actually started brightly with Friedel having to pull off a good save from Dyer after some splendid build up play from Milner and Carr.  The only problem was Blackburn scored off their first chance, with Bramble and Onyewu trying to catch McCarthy in the offside trap.  It would have made no difference if McCarthy was 10 meters onside or not.  He was in loads of space and could have casually sauntered up to the ball and tapped it in.

All our attacking play came down the left hand side as Dyer had done his usual vanishing act and Solano was left to deal with Pedersen, and was making a bit of a pigs ear of it.  Martin's first touch had left him during the Arsenal game and doesn't look like it going to return before the end of the season.  A string of chances to pull level where lost....tho if every chance had went in Blackburn would have still been beating us 5 – 3 at half time.  The whistle blew and the Toon army vented their frustrations.

The second half was more of the same.  Solano being run ragged and the rest of the defence making a meal of everything that went near them. Titus had developed a fetish for passing the ball to the oppositions right hand corner flag.  Some really colourful language was being blasted in his direction from just about every corner of the ground apart from the 23 Blackburn fans who had been bothered to travel up.  Hughes could tell from the way we were playing there was another goal in the game, so he brought on a fresh pair of legs up front.  Roeder swapped Dyer and Titus (who where both boo'ed off the pitch) with Ramage and Shovel but less than 3 mins later Carr and Milner let Bentley stroll into the box who crossed the ball to Roberts who, in turn, coolly headed the ball home.  The last 20 mins where met with further frustration with a couple of chances going begging.  First Owen had a shot cleared off the line then Martin had a shot that went wide.

The final whistle blew ending our misery and Roeder's career at St James'. The boo at the announcement for fans to remain seated while the team do a lap of honour surpassed the one that meet the final whistle, and it was followed by some 35,000 fans (people had been leaving in a steady stream since the second Blackburn goal) shouting FUCK OFF.

Needless to say the rest is history.....
