Michael Owen’s pre-game comments: |
| |
"Europe is always great for any club - it is great for the revenue. It's
great for the manager, the chairman and the fans because it means you
can buy and attract better players. You always need that in football
because without it, you fall behind. There are a lot of clubs involved
in takeovers at the moment and Europe helps you to be competitive on a
financial front. The UEFA Cup and being in Europe is very important to
us."
"It is a huge competition to win - not many teams can claim to have won
a European trophy. I don't know what people say about the UEFA Cup, but
you won't find anybody at St James' Park turning it down. It is a
massive one to win. You can't be any mugs to win the competition. When I
was at Liverpool, to win the competition we had to get past Olympiakos,
Roma and Barcelona - and that was to just get to the final. It is a
really tough competition to win." |

My thoughts: |
| |
It’s been the best part of three months but we return to the
battlefields of Europe this week. After successfully negotiating the
group stage last year, we find ourselves in the Round of 32, up against
little know Belgium outfit,
S.V. Zulte Waregem.
Zulte Waregem is a fairly new football club (see Did you know?) and are
currently not enjoying
great success
in the Belgium top flight this season. However, they can’t be
underestimated as they have already beaten
Austria Vienna, Sparta Prague and Espanyol in the UEFA
Cup this season.
With ‘Gooch’ ineligible in the
UEFA Cup, you’d presume Steven Taylor will slot in at centre-half, with
Nobby Solano reverting back to right back and Damien Duff starting on
the left of midfield and James Milner moving over to the right.
With only 650 ‘official’ Toon fans allowed into the stadium, it
certainly will be the hardcore away travellers who will be flying the
black & white flag in Belgium but you can guarantee they'll still make
themselves heard.
Our philosophy will no doubt be to go out and win this game but with the
1st leg being away from home, a goal scoring draw wouldn’t be
the end of the world really.

Did you know?
-
Zulte Sportief was founded in 1950. In 1976 the club merged with S.K.
Zulte. to become Zultse V.V and again in 2001, this time with the larger
and more successful KSV Waregem to become Sportvereniging Zulte Waregem,
S.V. Zulte Waregem. They won the 2004-05 Second Division thus gaining
promotion to the Belgium Juliper League. |
