 SEASON REVIEW – 2007/2008
19th May 2008
As the 2007/2008 season has now finished, Aussie Mags has sat down with a beer and reflected on the season that was.

It is far to say this season will not live in our memory for what we saw on the field.  A final placing of 12th with 43 points equals our lowest point return in the Premiership, but we have finished lower than 12th on four different occasions since 1993/94.

However, what we witnessed off the field could be a huge turning point for the football club.

The return of Kevin Keegan certainly took most fans by surprise.  His dramatic return, the new board structure, and the encouraging end of season form lifted the club from its slumber, breathing new life into the outlook all fans.

No doubt there will be set backs, and slip-ups along the way, but for the first time in well over a decade we have a manger and a board in place we fully trust.  With the club debts now cleared, and the prospect of Mike Ashley fully flexing his financial muscle in the transfer market, the summer looks to be an interesting one indeed.

Back to the action on the field though, and let us assess the performance of each member of the playing squad, and think about what the future could hold for them.

The squad has been broken down as follows:

Goalkeepers

Defenders

Midfielders

Strikers

 Everton 3 v 1 Newcastle United - Barclays Premiership Match 38
14th May 2008

Despite a Michael Owen penalty to level up the scores just after half time, Newcastle were unable to hold on as Everton ran out 3-1 winners to secure 5th place and a UEFA Cup spot.

Manager Kevin Keegan used the last game of the season to revert to a 4-4-2 formation, handing recent rare starts to Andy Carroll, Damien Duff, Alan Smith, and Charles N’Zogbia, in place of Joey Barton, Geremi, Obafemi Martins, and Mark Viduka.

 Newcastle United 0 v 2 Chelsea - Barclays Premiership Match 37
5th May 2008

Second half goals from Michael Ballack and Florent Malouda were good enough for Chelsea to beat Newcastle 0-2 at St James’ Park, meaning the Premiership title race goes down to the last weekend of the season.

The fact that Newcastle will feel slightly disappointed with that result proves how much their confidence and expectation has grown under Kevin Keegan in recent months.

West Ham United 2 v 2 Newcastle United - Barclays Premiership Match 36
30th April 2008
Newcastle came from two goals down to claim a point at Upton Park.

For the first 40 minutes, West Ham completely dominated the Geordies, who looked a shadow of the team that were unbeaten in six matches prior to their visit to east London.

Full-back George McCartney caused the visitors major problems on the left flank and had already served up two dangerous early crosses before setting up Mark Noble's third goal of the season with a fine cross that he volleyed home.

The home side went further ahead on 23 minutes.

Bobby Zamora headed keeper Robert Green's long kick on to Dean Ashton, who held off David Edgar before finding the bottom corner of the net.

But late in the first half, two goals in three minutes brought Newcastle back into the match.

 Newcastle United 2 v 0 sunderland - Barclays Premiership Match 35
21st April 2008
Two first half goals from Michael Owen was enough for Newcastle to win the 139th Tyne Wear derby.

Newcastle was far too good for its visitors, outclassing Sunderland for the vast majority of the encounter, as they extended their unbeaten run to six games.
The match was played to a bad drop of a wall of noise, as the Toon Army showed unanimous backing to Kevin Keegan’s resurgent side.
