Post Match Comments:
Newcastle caretaker boss Chris Hughton said
"I don't think it was the prettiest win, but nonetheless it was very pleasing. I think we needed that second goal for the game to open up but their keeper has made some terrific saves.

We got the early goal like we'd hoped and it was a great goal, real route one stuff and another fantastic finish from Shola.

After that both sides have had a couple of good chances and we've got Steve Harper to thank for two great saves in the second-half.

But we've got the win and that's the most important thing.

We're back up to third and confidence is high and two successive wins."

On the goal
"It was another fantastic finish, I was fortunate to be right behind it so I knew as soon as he struck it, it was going in.

He hit it early and didn't give the goalkeeper a chance to get his position set.

It was a brilliant flick from Andy and they've combined excellently - Shola knew where the ball was going.

But we know that's what the front two can do. They have a prowess in the air and can both finish. Shola has showed over the past couple of games what a good finisher he is and I'm sure the goals will start coming for Andy as well."

Sheff Wed manager said
"I am very disappointed that we didn't come away with something, especially on the basis of our second half performance.

In the first 15 minutes we were a bit like rabbits caught in the headlights. Newcastle then got their goal and it was a good finish from Ameobi but not a good goal from our point of view because it came from a ball straight down the middle.

Once we recovered from our start I thought we performed well and towards the end of the second half I felt we were in control. I am disappointed we have come here and played well but taken nothing from the game. Newcastle can say who cares about the performance because we have got the result.

After three games we have only got two points yet we have played some really good football. I said to the players after the second half that if we continue to play like that we will win more games than we lose. I think we have been playing football that is pleasing on the eye and we will take some real positives from the second half performance.

You need a good start here because there is a noisy bunch of supporters that can set the tone. You have to keep them quiet for the first half hour and hope their supporters start to moan and groan a bit but their players were moving the ball well and we effectively lost the game in the first 15 minutes."

Shola celebrates his goal

  Match Report:
Shola Ameobi's 4th goal in two games gave Newcastle United a 1-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday at St James' Park.  The victory puts Newcastle on 7 points and into 3rd in the league.

After only 15 minutes and a
Steve Harper long ball was flicked on by Andy Carroll and strike partner Ameobi hit a low angled drive under Sheff Wed's keeper, Lee Grant, into the Gallowgate end net.

Shola nearly had two before half-time when a header from a Ryan Taylor corner was saved by Grant.

The second half Sheff Wed came into the game more and created a couple of decent chances, the best of which was by Francis Jeffers was well saved by Harper.

Not the greatest sceptical of a game, but three points for Newcastle none the less. The game will be most remembered for a debut for Danny Simpson and a attendance of 43,179, which was 2,725 more than sunderland had the previous day at home to Chelsea.
