Match Comments:
Newcastle caretaker manger
Chris Hughton
"I am absolutely
delighted. What we wanted first and foremost was to win the game,
and if we were able to do that by scoring goals and putting in a
performance, that was certainly going to be a bonus.
We had good periods of the game against a very, very good passing
side, and the first two goals were of the highest quality.
The first goal was important because before
that we'd seen a couple of good chances go to waste.
But I was always confident that goal would come.
I was able to relax a little bit more after the second and the third
was the icing on the cake, for Shola, for all the lads and for the
fans.
He (Shola) is a
local lad and for any striker to come away with a match ball is
always a very, very proud moment for them.

Reading
manager Brendan Rodgers:
"It's one we won't cry about. It was a great experience today here for
the young players.
Newcastle is a wonderful club with a big history and stature and it was
good for my players to experience that, and we will be better." |

Match Report: |
|
| |
Newcastle United cruised to comfortable
3-0 victory over Reading at St James' Park thanks to a hat-trick by
Shola Ameobi.
News that Damien Duff was down in London for a medical ahead of his
impeding transfer to Fulham, meant Newcastle caretaker manager Chris
Hugton handed a start to Joey Barton as his replacement. New loan
signing Danny Simpson arrived to late on Friday to be included in the
squad and instead watched the match from the stands.
Most of the early running went the way of the home side. Kevin Nolan's
defence splitting pass played in Jonas
Gutierrez who ran brilliantly into the box, and with only the goalkeeper
to beat, the Argentinean international delayed his strike and lost
possession of the ball with the goal gapping.
Magpie captain Alan Smith was
committed and determined in
the tackle, and along with Joey Barton and Nolan they bossed the
midfield. Smith was however, lucky to stay on the pitch after a
poor tackle not long after receiving a yellow card.
Newcastle took the lead on 38 minutes after a wicked swinging cross from left-back
Jose Enrique found the forehead of the diving Shola Ameobi, who
directed the ball down and past Reading keeper Adam Federici.
The impressive home crowd of 36,944 witnessed the Magpie's grow in
confidence and less than 20 minutes into the second half Newcastle made
it 2-0 with the goal of the game.
Steven Taylor made a marauding run forward from the back but was forced
to give the ball backwards. A neat interchange between Nolan and
Barton then found Ryan Taylor who fired the ball into the box, but with
the ball falling loose towards the byline Nolan's
persistence in
chasing the ball down then led to Ryan Taylor swinging over a fine
centre from the right for Ameobi to power home a fine headed effort from
six yards out.
The next 10
minutes saw Shola denied a hat trick of headers by an acrobatic stop
from Federici, but Reading's Australian keeper could do nothing soon
afterwards.
A penalty was awarded when Reading striker Shane Long handled the ball
in the box from a cross.
Up stood Shola who fired home the penalty in front of an ecstatic
Gallowgate End.
That win makes it seven victories out of seven at home against The
Royals for Newcastle United.
Afterwards Shola dedicated his hat-trick to Sir Bobby Robson, and
certainly Sir Bobby would have been proud today. |
