Match Comments:
Newcastle caretaker manager Chris Hughton said:
"There were periods of
the game where we made hard work of it.
I am disappointed because we started the game
really well. Apart form the goal, we played at a very good tempo at the
start of the game.
For whatever reason, we weren't able to sustain it and of course
the longer the game goes without getting that second one, Plymouth are
lifted by the occasion and feel they can get something.
I think it's fair to say Danny and Nile have changed the game.
When you make changes you hope they make an impact, sometimes they do
and sometimes they don't. Thankfully, they did make a major impact.
We needed that Kevin Nolan goal and it encouraged the lads."
Plymouth boss Paul Sturrock:
"I have had two draws and six defeats. At the
end of the day, there's only so far a board can wait for me to turn it
around.
But they have been very committed to the cause. They see there is light
at the end of the tunnel, but we have got to turn it soon.
I am very, very confident that these players will turn it around."

Match Report: |

Newcastle United returned to winnings
ways, and maintained their 100% home record, by beating Plymouth Argyle
3-1 at St James' Park on Saturday.
Defender Steven Taylor got the Magpies off to the perfect start with a
goal on 6 minutes, when he headed home a Geremi corner.
Shortly afterwards
Peter Lovenkrands should have made it two
nil, but instead the Dane shot wide.
Surprisingly Newcastle failed to press home their advantage, and instead
it was the visitors who took control of the game. Much to the
frustration of the home fans it was The Pilgrims who pushed forward and
looked the most likely to score.
Five minutes after the interval and Plymouth did just that.
Midfielder Karl Duguid steered home a good cross
from Irish loanee
striker Cillian Sheridan.
Not long after Plymouth's left-back Gary Sawyers almost made it 1-2 to
The Pilgrims, but his 20 yard shot was well tipped over by Newcastle
goalkeeper Stephen Harper.
Newcastle boss Chris Hughton then made a double change, bringing on
striker Nile Ranger for
Lovenkrands,
and Danny Guthrie for Joey Barton.
And two minutes later substitute Guthrie crossed in for Kevin Nolan to
head in at the back post.
Andy Carroll secured the points for Newcastle on 84 minutes with a
stunning strike from the edge of the area. Carroll then nearly double
his tally in injury time when his fine effort smacked off the crossbar.
The victory moves Newcastle United back up to 2nd place in the league,
one point behind leaders West Brom Albion, who hammered the hapless
Middlesbrough 0-5 at the Riverside. |
