Post Match Comments:
Newcastle caretaker manager Chris Hughton said:

"We have got a totally focused group of players who, from minute one, saw an opportunity for us to stay on top of the division, and very much took that opportunity.

We have got used to getting on with the job. There are things we can't affect, but I am very lucky that I have got a group of players who are focused on one thing, and that's on staying where we are at the right end of the table with the ultimate aim of getting promotion.

We are focused enough and it certainly hasn't taken anything away from the victory."

Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson said:
"Out of every game I've got to take positives, but we just don't give ourselves a chance.

We spoke at length about trying to keep and trying to get control of the game quickly.

We knew they'd come out of the traps quick they always do at home. I think they were hurting a little bit from the defeat in the cup."

  Match Report:
Maiden goals from Jonas Gutierrez and Danny Simpson, plus a Andy Carroll header, saw Newcastle United comfortably beat Peterborough United 3-1 at St James' Park.

A vocal home crowd, who were protesting about Mike Ashley's decision to rename the stadium, were rewarded by a fine performance from the Magpies.

On 15 minutes
Gutierrez picked up possession on the left flank before cutting inside and out of two Posh defenders and into the box, where the Argentinean blasted his shot into the net for his first ever Toon goal.

Three minutes later and Newcastle were 2-0 up.  Striker Carroll rose above everyone else to head home a Danny Guthrie corner from six-yards out for his fourth goal of the season.

Unfortunately Gutierrez's day was to end one minute later, as the winger had to be replaced by Ryan Taylor due to a leg injury

Seven minutes into the second half and the game was affectively over with Newcastle's third goal.  A swift counter-attack found Marlon Harewood, the Aston Vila loanee played in the overlapping Simpson and the right-back hit a cross cum shot that sailed into the far corner beyond goalkeeper Joe Lewis.

With ten minutes remaining Peterborough got a consolation goal.  The ball pinballed inside the United penalty box and fell at the feet of Dean Keates, the Posh man then spun and fired in a low shot past Stephen Harper.

Their third win in a row was enough for Newcastle to maintain their two point cushion at the top of the Championship as the teams now head into an international break.
