Post Match Comments:
Newcastle caretaker manger Chris Hughton said:
"It wasn't the prettiest win.  We knew it was always going to be tough here today and it certainly was that.

We didn't create a great deal going forward but I thought we defended superbly.

It was backs to the wall at times, but we were strong and got the win I thought we deserved.

It was a great header (by
Fabricio Coloccini) but he also did very well on the first phase.

Nile Ranger has climbed ever so well (to connect with Taylor's corner) but it's Colo that has got onto the first ball, played it out wide and got back into the box and, of course, got himself on the end of it.  We've got to applaud him for that and it proved to be the crucial goal.

Apart from that I thought he was excellent and was a key part of a terrific defensive display.

I think a goal would give him (Nile Ranger) a huge lift.  It would do wonders for his confidence and it would be thoroughly deserved."

He's learning but it's tough for him at the moment because he's up against seasoned pros and he's not getting everything his own way. He's doing ever so well in phases of a game, but what he has been able to do is keep going.

Just when you think he's maybe tiring a little bit, he comes again.  He's doing an excellent job for the time and it's certainly an exciting time for him."

Newcastle goalscorer
Fabricio Coloccini said:
"I was very happy to score my first goal and it was an important goal for the team.
The first cross came in and I managed to get the ball back to Ryan Taylor. He then put in another good cross and I was able to get my header into the back of the net.

I only got back into England on Friday so to play the full match, score the winner and keep a clean sheet is perfect for me.

We've not conceded for five games now which is fantastic - we feel very confident and long may it continue."

  Match Report:
Defender Fabricio Coloccini was the unlikely hero for Newcastle United when his 18th minute header was enough to beat Cardiff City on Sunday.

Newcastle dominated the opening exchanges at Cardiff City Stadium, putting the home team under pressure without creating many chances.

On 18 minutes though the Argentinean international defender header home a Ryan Taylor cross.  Coloccini worked well to head a Taylor corner back into his path, then after Taylor sent in an inviting cross, Coloccini jumped highest among a cluster of players to head passed goalkeeper David Marshall.

This sparked Cardiff into life as the home side pushed for an equaliser.  Michael Chorpa was the chief goal threat, but is was Scottish international, Chris Burke, who forced Stephen Harper into any type of save.

The second half saw a determined and committed rear guard effort by Newcastle United, with the midfield battle now being won by Cardiff, the Bluebirds created an array of chances, but a combination of poor finishing and sloppy final balls kept the score at 0-1 to the away side.

In the fourth minute of injury time Alan Smith brought down Cardiff striker Jay Boothroyd on the edge of the box and was rightly shown a second yellow card.  Smith's tireless efforts over the 90 minutes will not be tarnished however, as it was clear he was taking one for the team.

The resulting free-kick came to nothing, meaning the win moved Newcastle United back to the top of the Coca-Cola Championship and extended their unbeaten start to the season to six games.
