Team News: |
| |
Newcastle are likely to
hand a debut to new right-back Danny Simpson, who was signed yesterday
on a 6-month loan deal from Manchester United, while they are again
without Nicky Butt (hand) and Danny Guthrie (hamstring). However,
goalkeeper Stephen Harper has been passed fit after suffering a head
injury at West Brom last week and interim manager Chris Hughton has
indicated he will start..
Reading have no new injury worries, and manager Brendan Rodgers is
likely to field the same line-up that drew at home to Nottingham Forest
on the opening day. |

Pre-match comments:
Newcastle interim boss Chris Hughton said
"It is an honour to manage Newcastle
United Football Club.
The fans here are so passionate about their team and, for me, it is
a privilege to be able to lead them into the season.
We just hope to get the best start possible. We were happy enough
with a point at West Brom but our aim is definitely all three
against Reading.
I think we're expecting a crowd of 30,000 plus on Saturday and that
is terrific.
It will be a huge boost for everyone and myself and the players are
desperate to give them something to shout about. We can't
thank them enough for their support this summer, they have been
magnificent."
Reading boss Brendan Rodgers said
"This is a great game to go and play in. You want to play in big
stadia and in a big environment.
There will also be big emotion, it's the first game since Sir Bobby
Robson passed away and he was a great man. He was a great role model
for British coaches, he travelled around the world, Spain, Portugal,
Holland and we respect that, he is a legend in Newcastle.
For us, we have to draw a positive from the atmosphere, and once
that whistle goes we obviously want to win the game.
Playing at Newcastle is a great occasion and we have no fear going
there. It's great to have the chance to play them early because it's
a good marker for us in this division.
Every game in this league is tough and this is no different. We will
go there with a positive attitude and look for a positive result.
This game is part of our learning. Whether you're young or old,
going to St James's Park can be a tough game but it is part of the
learning. Our young lads have experience, they're not 17 and
straight out of the Academy. Look at someone like Simon Church, he's
a full international."

Match Preview: |
| |
Newcastle United
start their home Championship campaign with a live Saturday tea time
match against Reading.
It is fair to say the uncertainly surrounding St James' Park is
over-whelming these days. To be going into the first home game of a new
season with no permanent manager and a owner who doesn't know if will
sell the club or not, is frankly appalling.
Given all that, it makes the performance and result away to WBA last
week even more satisfying. Far from it being a vintage Magpie
display that will go down in history, it proves that the players are
trying their best to not let the off-field shambles effort them.
Talk again this week of players leaving has overshadowed Chris Hughton's
preparations. Fulham have allegedly made a bid for Damien Duff, and now
there are rumours that Everton will go in for Steven Taylor if
Joleon Lescott is praised away to
Manchester City.
There has been some good news though, and it would appear Mike Ashley
has now sanctioned in-coming transfer activity. Danny Simpson, a 22
year-old right-back from Manchester United, has arrived on loan until
January, and this is welcome news for our much maligned defensive
stocks. Simpson is expected to make his debut with Ryan Taylor either
dropping down to the bench or moving into midfield.
Reading are a side which is a far cry from it's Premiership heyday of a
few years ago. This summer they have lost arguable their two best
players, Stephen Hunt and Kevin Doyle, who have both been sold to
Premier League clubs, leaving behind a youthful team containing numerous
ex-academy players.
In saying that Reading still pose a major threat in the Championship,
and again should be one of the contenders in the mix for a play-off spot
at least. They team passes the ball very well from front to back, and
they will be looking to current Irish International Shane Long to score
the goals to get them back into the Premiership.
Disappointingly the Royals fans have not taken their full away
allocation, probably influenced by distance and live TV coverage, and
have sold only roughly 1,100 tickets.
For the Toon Army this match means a little bit more than just three
points, this game marks the first home game since Sir Bobby Robson
passed away. I'm sure the fans will give him a tremendous send off, and
at the same time, back the team to hopefully what will be a victory.
So I think it is fitting that I leaving the last words to the great man
himself.
"What is a club in any case? Not the buildings or the directors or the
people who are paid to represent it. It's not the television contracts,
get out clauses or the marketing departments or executive boxes. It's
the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your
city'' - Sir Bobby Robson |

Reading F.C. were
formed in 1871. They were originally nicknamed The Biscuitmen
after one of the main trades in the town, Huntley & Palmers biscuits,
but changed to the Royals in the 1970s, when the company closed their
factory. |
