Team News: |

It has
been confirmed that Newcastle United will be without Shola Ameobi
(foot), Andy Carroll (groin), and Jonas Gutierrez (hamstring). Gutierrez
looks set for a four-week spell on the sidelines, while confirmation is
awaited on the length of Ameobi's absence.
Newcastle do however, expect to welcome back Nicky Butt after missing
the 1-0 win over Leicester City because of a slight ankle problem.
Recent signing Peter Lovenkrands could make his second debut if he
proves his match fitness.
For Cardiff City, striker Ross McCormack is missing with a hamstring
injury but follow striker Jay Bothroyd has been declared fit after
suffering a knee strain in the 2-0 defeat at Doncaster Rovers.
Highly rated Welsh international Joe Ledley is expected to play despite
a broken bone in his wrist. |

Pre-match comments:
Newcastle caretaker boss Chris Hughton said
“What we do have are lads in midfield capable of scoring goals. Danny
Guthrie is a good striker of the ball. Kevin Nolan is used to being in
those positions.
Nicky Butt is a big, big player and Alan Smith has been doing a great
job. If you are able to create more from midfield then even better.
What we have are players who can play in those advanced positions. They
enjoy getting into those positions. Once they do that
they give us opportunities
to create and score goals.
That’s what they are doing at the moment."
(About Vuckic and Ranger)
“Haris made his debut against Leicester. He’s been involved with the
first team since pre-season. He is still very young, but he’ll very much
be around the first team this season.
Every game is a big experience for him. It’s important at a club like
this that we look to produce our own. It’s about him getting an
opportunity and I’m quite certain he will get it here.
Ranger kept coming and coming again in his last game, even as the lone
man. He really fancies it. I think he will get better
with experience. He is
certainly a first-team squad member now."
Cardiff City boss David Jones said
"They're a Premier League football club in this division. I think this
is one of the biggest league games this football club has had for many a
year because of who we are playing.
Everybody wrote them off - the so-called experts not the people within
the game. They knew they had good players and the staff know their
players because they've been there a while.
Nobody expected them to be as bad as what the experts were saying,
because players have a lot of pride and 44,000 fans that turn up won't
allow them to go out on to the pitch and not perform.
Hopefully we can get the result we are all looking for. We are playing a
very, very tough side who are top of the league. They will want to stay
there but we want to knock them off and get with them." |

Match Preview: |
| |
On Sunday Newcastle United travel
down to the Welsh capital to take on Cardiff City in a live lunchtime
kick-off.
This season marks the Bluebirds first season in their new purpose built
home, Cardiff City Stadium, which is only a short distance from their
old ground of Ninian Park.
With four competitive games at the ground to date, Cardiff have a 100%
record beating Scunthorpe, Bristol City, Dagenham & Redbridge, and
Bristol Rovers, and a sold out away allocation means this match will be
a 26,828 sell-out that will set a new attendance record at the stadium.
Cardiff
City have strong side with a string of players with top flight and
international experience, making them one of the most competitive teams
in this division.
Scottish trio of David
Marshall, Chris Burke, and Gavin Rae were signed from either Celtic or
Rangers, while winger Peter Whittingham used to play for Aston Vila, and
striker Jay Bothroyd had a spell in Serie A with Perugia.
Left-back Tony Capaldi has over 20 caps for Northern Ireland, and
talented 22 year-old midfielder Joe Ledley already has 30 caps for
Wales. Ledley has been in eye catching form this season which
again sparked interest from a number of Premier League clubs.
However, the man to watch for
Cardiff is Michael Chopra. The
Championships top scorer, with seven goal already this season, will be
relishing the opportunity to play against his former club and will be
the man to stop for the Magpies.
Newcastle caretaker manager Chris Hughton looks set to turn again to
Nile Ranger as the lone striker because of the absence of Ameobi and
Carroll, and the lack of match fitness of Lovenkrands. This would
again mean a 5-man midfield, that worked so well against Leicester City,
with Kevin Nolan playing in the advanced role.
Fit again Nicky Butt you would expect will come into the side for Geremi,
forming a tough centre midfield partnership with Alan Smith, while Joey
Barton and Danny Guthrie will occupy the wide roles.
If Newcastle are to achieve a positive result, then the midfield area
will be a key battle, with Newcastle hoping to use the extra man to
their advantage. They will be looking to contain, and then control the
home side who have already scored a impressive 16 goals in their new
home.
Without a doubt this will be Newcastle's biggest test to date, and with
bookies having the home side as favourites, Newcastle will have their
work cut out if they wish to retain their position at the top of the
league. |
