Did You Know?
It is 11 years since Newcastle United last recorded a victory away to Man City. Alan Shearer scored the only goal that day at Main Road back in September 2000.

Team News:
Newcastle Utd –
On Thursday manager Alan Pardew said key midfieler Cheick Tiote still isn’t quite 100% ready to return from a knee problem and in addition he said Sylvain Marveaux requires a operation and will be out till the new year. Mike Williamson remains on the long-term injury list.

Doubts exist about both Gabriel Obertan (toe) and Leon Best (groin), while Yohan Cabaye came through the international break unscathed for France and is expected to start.

Man City - Midfielder Samir Nasri has been ruled out after being diagnosed with tendinitis of the knee.  Striker Sergio Aguero is expected to play after being passed fit on his groin injury.

A panorama view of the City of Manchester Stadium

Match Preview
Manchester City entertain Newcastle United at the Eithad Stadium tonight as the only two unbeaten Premier League teams face off in a top-of-the-table clash.

Man City are without doubt the league’s best team this season. Their record of 10 wins and only 1 draw, including the most impressive 6-1 win at Old Trafford, makes them the most feared team in England these days. Summer signing Sergio Aguero has formed a lethal striking partnership with Edin Džeko, and along with fellow striker Mario Balotelli, the three strikers have scored 24 league goals between them already this season. Striking power is not just City’s main strength, the midfield form of David Silva, James Milner, Adam Johnson, and Yaya Toure will take some stopping for a Magpie team minus Cheick Tiote.

To make matters worse Newcastle have a recent poor record away at City with only two draws in the last eight games and our last victory come back in September 2000. But Alan Pardew’s Newcastle United are a team that never gives in and has a tremendous team spirit that has risen to the occasion more than once already this season.

In this instance the league’s meanest defence, conceding only 8 goals, will need to be bang on form and be well protected by it’s midfield. The defensive cover that Jonas Gutierrez gives down our left-hand side will be vital to assist right-footed Ryan Taylor at left-back. R.Taylor has been impressive this season so far, but you do feel he is one game away from being caught out defensively.

Danny Guthrie has shown some of his best form since coming in for Tiote and he will need to be at his blue collar best in the middle of the park again. Alongside him will thankfully be Yohan Cabaye who has recovered quicker than expected. His start to his Newcastle career has been fabulous and the classy French international has given our midfield some passing nonce that had been lacking in Kevin Nolan.

With Gabriel Obertan and Sylvain Marveaux both out injured that leaves a hole in our right-hand side of midfield. Pardew basically has two options, either bringing new England U21 international Sammy Ameobi or Hatem Ben Arfa. My understanding is that Ben Arfa has been earmarked to play in the #10 role behind the striker and not in the wide positions, so I suspect Sammy Ameobi may get the nod and if Leon Best is injured then Ben Arfa should also start too.

My Starting XI:
Tim Krul
Danny Simpson, Steven Taylor, Fabricio Coloccini, Ryan Taylor
Sammy Ameobi, Danny Guthrie, Yohan Cabaye, Jonas Gutierrez
Hatem Ben Arfa
Demba Ba

Nobody is expecting us to win, and my head says that our unbeaten run will end tonight, but football in a funny old game and if the lads play at their best again we could sneak ourselves a draw.

Odds:

Did You Know?
Tottenham haven’t won on their last five league visits to St James’ Park.

Team News:
Newcastle -
Demba Ba and Yohan Cabaye are fit despite reportedly suffering injuries on international duty and Haris Vuckic and Shola Ameobi should be available again. Danny Guthrie and Sammy Ameobi are doubts with respective groin and hamstring problems, while Mike Williamson is still sidelined.

Spurs - Vedran Corluka and Niko Kranjcar have been ruled out with foot and thigh injuries respectively. There are doubts over Emmanuel Adebayor (hamstring) and Sandro (calf).

Match Preview
The international break is finally over and the Premier League returns with Newcastle United taking on Tottenham Hotspur at St James’ Park in the Sunday afternoon (UK Time) kick-off tonight.

Fans arriving at St James’ Park will be greeted by more advertising with another sports direct sign erected, this time on the outside of the Milburn Stand facing Barrack Road. While this is hardly crime number one, the branding of the stadium as one big Mike Ashley advertisement is becoming an overkill and unnecessary.

Both teams are in red hot form with Spurs winning their last four after losing the opening two, while the Toon are still unbeaten and have won their last two games. On 15 points Newcastle are still 4th after Liverpool drew last night and Tottenham sit in 6th place on 12 points, but they do have a game in hand on the teams in the top 10.

This match has all the makings of a cracking contest. Having conceded just four goals in this season’s Premier League (fewest in the top flight) Newcastle are forging a reputation for being hard to beat. Alan Pardew has built his team from the back, and despite selling Jose Enrique, his back four and goalkeeper have looked extremely solid. However, they will put to its sternest test to date against a Spurs team containing the in-form Emmanuel Adebayor, Rafeal Van der Vaart, Jermaine Defoe and Luka Modrić.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew’s only major team selection decision will be whether to drop make-shift left-back Ryan Taylor and give a debut to summer signing Davide Santon who is now fully fit. To drop Ryan Taylor would be harsh, given his form, but there is a feeling it is only a matter of time before Taylor gets badly exposed and with the pacey Aaron Lennon likely to line up against him, this could be the time to do it.

My Starting XI:
Tim Krul
Danny Simpson, Steven Taylor, Fabricio Coloccini, Davide Santon
Cheik Tiote, Yohan Cabaye
Gabriel Obertan                                                           Jonas Gutierrez
Demba Ba Leon Best

Our first ever Premier League game was at home to Spurs in August 1993 and the cockneys spoilt the party that day with a 0-1 victory, but it has been up hill ever since for the Toon as our home record against Spurs in the Premier League years reads 10 wins, 4 draws and only 3 defeats.

The most of all was a 7-1 victory thanks to an attacking masterclass lead by Alan Shearer and Les Ferdinand back in December 1996. Take a deek at the highlights while you wait for the match tonight…

On a personally level I really don’t like Spurs, or the Spuds as we call them, I don’t know what it is about this cockney team that gives me that extra level of hate but they manage it very successfully. So lets hope the international break hasn’t affected us too much and we can continue this excellent start to the season.

Magpies remain in top four

Published by sTyLe on October 5th, 2011 - in Season 2011/2012

By James Hedley

Monday 03 October 2011

Newcastle go into the international break still unbeaten after holding off a second half fight back by Wolves. Through a combination of some fine goalkeeping, brave defending and more than a hint of good fortune, the Magpies returned from Molineux with all three points for the first time since 1990. The biggest controversy came near the end when the linesman ruled that a ball was out of play just seconds before Wolves thought they had equalised. There was also a controversial decision to not award a penalty that went the away team’s way in the first half. But Alan Pardew and his side will feel they more than deserved their good fortune following another impressive performance.

At the moment Newcastle are hanging on to the coattails of the expected title contenders and are only four points behind Manchester United. Given the gulf between the money spent and the squads at the different managers’ disposal, Pardew will rightly feel that his team are currently punching well above their weight. How long they can keep this run going remains to be seen with the next game at home to Spurs likely to give an indicator of how far they can go. A top four finish would be unrealistic but perhaps a place in one of the European spots is not out of the question based on their current form.

The latest player to make the headlines was goalkeeper Tim Krul who produced a fine display on Saturday. The Dutchman had been relatively untested in the previous two games but he showed he was not out of practice against the Wolves’ attackers. Krul made several top drawer saves to underline the progress he has made in the last couple of years. He can now be regarded as one of the standout performers in his position so far this season and at still a young age for a goalkeeper there is plenty of room to improve. Before the game, Krul revealed to the local media he does not consider himself the club’s number one yet but on the evidence of his current form he is one of the first names on the team sheet.

After the game, Krul spoke of his belief that Newcastle had earned their share of god fortune against Wolves. He told the club’s official website: “We got a bit of luck at times, but you write your own luck. Last year a lot of the deflections went in, and I’m just glad they didn’t go in today because it meant three points. We had already shown at the start of the season that we are solid. We’ve been working hard on the defensive side of our game, and it’s paying off now.” Krul will now be hoping to be involved for his country is the latest round of international fixtures. He has so far achieved two caps for the Netherlands since making his debut against Brazil earlier this year.

Did You Know?
Fulham have already played 10 competitive games this season following their entry in the 1st Qualifying Round of the Europa League which started back at the end of June.

Team News:
Newcastle -
Hatem Ben Arfa remains sidelined by injury, while Shola Ameobi, Gabriel Obertan, Cheik Tiote, Jonas Gutierrez and Steven Taylor are all expected to recalled to the starting line-up after the victory over Scunthorpe in the Carling Cup.

Fulham – John Arne Riise misses out after being carried off with a leg injury in the Europa League clash with Dnipro, while midfielder Simon Davies has been ruled out for 5 months with knee problems. Striker Bobby Zamora is also a doubt for the match.

Managers Comments:

Alan Pardew: “From what I’ve seen, sometimes the right results (Fulham’s) don’t reflect the performances. I think their performances have been very strong and they’ve got some very good players. They’ll have another strong season. They’re a good defensive unit and they’re playing a little bit more expansively under Martin Jol, so that’s a little tweak on their style. And obviously we’re tweaking our style a little bit. We haven’t actually got it as I want it yet but (Yohan) Cabaye probably had his best game last night and was starting to influence things for us and making us look a bit different.”

Match Preview
Newcastle United take on Fulham at St James Park in their third Premier League encounter of the season tonight.

It has been another huge and dramatic week at SJP starting with a big Tyne Wear derby win down the road against the unwashed last Saturday, then there was a thrilling midweek extra-time Carling Cup win against Scunthorpe and on Friday all that was soured by the news that Joey Barton had been sold to QPR on a free transfer.

The sale of Barton was hardly a surprise given his earlier public criticism of the clubs ambitions, but the transfer fee and the club he went too is the sticking point for most fans.

Good (and bad) players come and go, but the football club always remains. Most fans sane Newcastle United fans accept that, the current problem is the way in which Mike Ashley is asset stripping the club of its highest earning players despite their on-field ability. The transfers of Andy Carroll, Jose Enrique, Kevin Nolan, Joey Barton means Ashley has now removed the vast majority of our pre-relegation high earners, and by my calculations only Fabricio Coloccini and Alan Smith remain on the pay role earning £40,000 a week or more.

The £35m promised in summer transfer funds has failed to materialise (not surprisingly!) leaving huge gaps in the squad, especially at left-back and upfront. If it wasn’t obvious to some fans before then Ashley’s plan for Premier League survival at the minimal expense, and hence recouping his money quicker, should be all plan for people to see now.

Back to the action on the pitch and following his stunning strike at Scunthorpe young Sammy Ameobi may have played himself into a starting role. With our lack of quality and in-form strikers, I would like to see Alan Pardew play a 4-3-2-1 formation below. This was mean Dan Gosling, Cheik Tiote and Yohan Cabaye could all start in the middle leaving Jonas and Sammy to patrol the forward flanks.

My Starting XI:
Tim Krul
Danny Simpson, Steven Taylor, Fabricio Coloccini, Ryan Taylor
Dan Gosling, Cheik Tiote, Yohan Cabaye
Jonas Gutierrez                                                           Sammy Ameobi
Shola Ameobi

Fulham have a shocking away record. Last season despite finishing in 8th place they only managed 3 away Premier League victories. This season already they have played 5 away games and they have only scored in 1 of those games.

If the Newcastle players are well backed from the home fans we should have enough to beat Marton Jol’s team. Fresh rumours of fans protests before the game have been on the internet, but so too has the Twitter campaign to #BringBackTheScarves which is in reference to the Alan Shearer testimonial where the home fans generated an electric visual atmosphere by swirling thousands of scarves.

Hopefully the later occurs…

Did You Know?
The history of the rivalry between the Newcastle and sunderland dates as far back to the 17th century English Civil War when protestations over advantages that merchants in the Royalist Newcastle had over their Wearside counterparts led to sunderland becoming a Parliamentarian stronghold. Then during the Jacobite Rebellions of 1745 Newcastle and sunderland were again at loggerheads, with Newcastle supporting King George and sunderland siding with the Scottish Stuarts.

Team News:
Newcastle -
Hatem Ben Arfa and Danny Guthrie are the only two players who are definitely out injured. Shane Ferguson and Sylvain Marveux both came through a training ground game unscathed during the week, while Steve Harper should be on the bench following Fraser Forster loan move to Celtic

mackems – John O’Shea could recover from a hamstring injury in time to make his Sunderland bow in the Tyne-Wear derby.

Managers Comments:
Steve Bruce:
“We have to be honest – we didn’t handle the situation very well at all last yearand I hope we will be better this year. I expect us to be better. We know what to expect and that stands you in good stead. The experience is vital in games like this.”

Alan Pardew: “I’ve been involved in a few derbies where you get the rivalry, but nothing with the same energy as this one generates. We are looking forward to it. We know we’ve got close to 3,000 fans going along. Last year they were magnificent and I have no doubt that they will be again.”

Match Preview
Newcastle United v 5under1and is without doubt our biggest match of any season and this season it just so happens the Tyne Wear Derby occurs very early as we travel over to the darkside for our second game of the campaign. Saturday night is the 145th Tyne-Wear derby with the Toon looking for our first victory at the Stadium of Shite since that historic 4-1 thrashing.

Memories are still fresh among the Toon Army of that marvellous 5-1 victory at home against the mackems last season and despite coinciding a late equaliser in the return fixture at the Stadium of Shite, Newcastle have had the recent advantage over the 5under1nad, with the home side winning only one of the last 13 encounters.

This is a big test of his reign at Newcastle United for manager Alan Pardew. He has a chance to redeem himself a little bit and put behind all the summer transfer nonsense if he can steer his team to victory. Importantly he must somehow galvanise his new French foreign legion into understanding what this game is all about, and quick. Better managers than Pardew have had their reputations enhanced and soured by success or not in this fixture. For Pardew a defeat, and a bad one at that, could be the finally nail in the coffin for any respect the fans would show to him.

One man who could be Pardew’s saviour is Shola Ameobi. The Fenham Eusébio has scored six goals in ten games against 5under1and and Pardew has already publicly stated that Ameobi will start, proving just how important the Geordie striker is to the team.

Following the draw against Arsenal on the opening weekend I would make one change and bring in Gabriel Obertain for Demba Ba. The pace of Obertan could be a vital weapon away from home this season and the extra man in midfield could prove important in what will no doubt be a furious battle in the middle of the park.

My Starting XI:
Tim Krul
Danny Simpson, Steven Taylor, Fabricio Coloccini, Ryan Taylor
Gabriel Obertan, Joey Barton, Cheik Tiote, Yohan Cabaye, Jonas Gutierrez
Shola Ameobi
